Big Sur is a popular vacation destination along California's historic Route 1 Highway. It is home to redwood forests, rocky coastlines, and countless hiking trails. Central Big Sur consists of a few restaurants, hotels, and general stores. Most visitors come to camp and mobile phones often don't work. This is a place to be immersed in natural beauty.
There are many online recommendations for what to do in Big Sur. A few personal favourites include:
-Hiking: Stella is partial to the forested trails within Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Firdaus points you to coastal hikes in Andrew Molera or Julia Pfeiffer Burns
-Sundowners: Nepenthe is the perfect place to grab wine or a hot chocolate while watching the sun set
-Touring: Pt. Sur Lighthouse is perched on top of a dramatic volcanic rock just off-shore. The tour is great and the views can't be missed. Book ahead
-Brunch: While lines are long, Deetjen's, Big Sur's quirkiest inn, does a cozy and memorable brunch
-Picnics: You won't lack for places to eat outside. We often grab food and a blanket and spend lunch eating under a tree
-Massages: If you book far in advance, you can visit Esalen. Home to hot springs and spiritual workshops, you can book on-site massages overlooking the ocean. After the massage, spend time in the mineral baths
-Heart Castle (south of Big Sur): Once home to newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, this estate is surely the most extravagant in CA. Sign up in advance for a phenomenal tour. If you are driving from LA, watch out for the Hearst zebras that still roam along this stretch of Highway 1
-Carmel (north of Big Sur): If you are driving from San Francisco or San Jose, stop by this little gem. This town is home to cute boutiques and galleries
-Monterey (north of Big Sur): Home to one of the best aquariums in the world. Enjoy the pier, the mission, and Steinbeck's historic cannery row
